Aletta Oostwouder was born in Zwanenberg just outside of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands on February 23, 1922. She was the eldest daughter of Willem and Marie Oostwouder. She lived through the Nazi occupation of Holland as a teenager. This had a profound effect on her for the remainder of her life.
In 1949 she married Huibert Slegers and had two sons Arie and Bill. They immigrated to California in 1954. In California she had a third son Marvin. In 1964 the family moved to Newberg, Oregon where they purchased a farm. After leaving her parent's family in Holland, Aletta spoke weekly with her sisters in Holland and Great Britain by phone.
In 1979 they moved to West Salem where they enjoyed their retirement. She was a member of Sunnyslope Christian Reformed for almost 50 years. She had many close friends in the church and the Dutch community and enjoyed socializing with these friends. Aletta maintained many Dutch customs and always had Dutch delicacies and foods. She enjoyed knitting and word puzzles.
Aletta was preceded in death by her third son Marvin in 1970, and her husband Hubert in 2010. She is survived by her sons Arie and Bill and her daughter in law Patty Slegers. She has four grandchildren Nathan Slegers, Aimee Noble, Becky Hoiting and Joel Slegers. She also has 8 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 11th at 11:00 am at Christian Reform Church. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 9:30 am at Restlawn memory Gardens.
