Allan (Al) was born on the Chiloquin Indian Reservation in Southern Oregon. He moved to Salem at about age 9, riding a horse all the way. School wasn't his priority and when World War II broke out, he could not wait to join. He was in the Navy, serving primarily in the South Pacific. After the war, he held many jobs, always looking for the one he liked a little more. There were shipyards, warehouse jobs, restaurant ownership and commercial fishing and diving in California. When he moved to Salem again, he was a Hovercraft dealer, an auto dealer and broker, a construction contractor, a landlord, and a farmer. Many years after not completing the 9th grade, he proudly became a high school graduate in 2002.
Al had the gift of gab. He could charm anyone and sell anything. Each profession he attempted succeeded. People gravitated to him. He will be terribly missed. No matter where he traveled, he always seemed to find someone he had met in the past. He and his wife of 39 years have lived on a farm near Rickreall for the past 30 years.
Hobbies included antique automobiles, a collection of beer steins, and antiques.
He is survived by sons, Jeff and Dan, and a daughter, Meredith. There are many grandchildren and great grandchildren and one sister, Anne Lamirand.
A celebration of life will be held at the Polk County Fairgrounds on April 5th (his birthday) from 12 to 5. It will be a potluck plus a BBQ. Burial will be private.
