Charles Henry Horch

April 13, 1919 — March 19, 2014

SALEM - Charles was born to Henry and Margaret (Maze) in St. Mary's, Ohio.

Upon graduating from Ohio State University in 1942, and receiving an Ensign Commision in the Navy, he was called to active duty at the Naval Training Center at Cornell University School for Diesel Engineering. He was then transferred to the Sub Chaser Training Center in Miami, FL and subsequently served as Chief Engineering Officer (and Plankowner) of the USS Wilhoite-DE397. The Wilhoite served with the USS Bogue battle group in the North Atlantic where they were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for actions in combat. He was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in April 1946.

After the war, Charles worked in the paper industry. Working at Mead Corporation Research in Chillicothe, OH then as Resident Manager of Meads Leominster, MS Mill.

He was selected from a group of executives to attend Harvard Business School for Advanced Management. Upon completion he transferred back to Chillicothe where he was Vice President and General Manager of Meads combined mills in Chillicothe. Next he became Manufacturing Manager for the Fraser Paper Mill in Madawaska, Maine. He completed his career with Boise Cascade Paper where he was the Production Manager at the St. Helens Mill, Resident Manager of the Bataan Pulp and Paper Mill, Philipinnes and Product development Manager here at the former Salem Mill where he retired in 1982.

Charles was active in Rotary and held offices in the United Way, Chamber of Commerce, and the Boy Scouts of America.

He was a loving Husband and Father. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, gardening and driving across country visiting old friends and past Navy Shipmates. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Linda. His three daughters, Rebecca, Jennifer, and Heather and his two sons, Charles Jr. and Marc.

At Charles request, there will be no viewing or service. We wish to thank Gentiva Hospice Salem and Independence Health and Rehab Facility. Donations in Memorial can be made to the Make a Wish foundation/Oregon or Gentiva Hospice/Salem. Arrangements by Restlawn Funeral Home.
