Charlie Hoppe, 13, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 1, 2019 after a long illness and several surgeries in the PICU at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Charlie was born to Austin and Lisa Hoppe on May 15, 2006 where he spent 10 weeks in the NICU at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He lived in West Salem with his parents and siblings, Abigail, 21, Evelyn, 19, and Ethan, 17.
Charlie loved people, horses, and Titan football. He thoroughly enjoyed going to school and riding the school bus every day. He attended Chapman Hill Elementary, Lamb Elementary, and Straub Middle School. Charlie was always happy to see his helpers and friends at school and was thrilled to be a part of his middle school social studies classes. He was non-verbal, but he had no trouble communicating with his peers. He had a smile that could light up a room and a wonderful, joyful laugh.
Almost every Saturday morning, Charlie would start his day out on one of the horses at HART (Horses Adaptive Riding Therapy in Rickreall). He loved to wear his cowboy hat and saunter out into the field on horseback with the sun and gentle breeze on his face. When Charlie was riding, he felt completely free…just a horse, a saddle, and a boy.
West Salem Titan Football was the other thing that brought Charlie joy. From a very young age, he enjoyed watching his brother’s games and practices. This became something that he liked to go up to the high school to watch as each football season approached. In October of 2014, Charlie was invited to attend the varsity football game as on honorary captain. The captains pushed him out of the big blown up helmet and out onto the turf for the coin toss. Charlie’s smile was so big you could see it all the way back to the stands. Each captain from both teams and each referee shook Charlie’s hand before beginning the game. It was the thrill of a lifetime!
A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, August 12th at 3pm at Salem Alliance Church.
