Longtime Salem resident Clyde Gilman passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early on the morning of Sunday, May 25, 2014. At the time, he was residing at Farmington Square Residential Care where he lived the last three years.
Except for his three and a half years of service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Clyde had lived in Salem since 1938. He and his parents moved from the Dust Bowl in the Southeastern corner of Colorado that year to join other family members who had come to Oregon in 1937.
Clyde graduated from Salem High School in 1939. He worked at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill until April 1942, when he joined the Navy. He married Ethyl Mae Williams, his fiance from Salem, on October 3, 1942 in San Diego, California. He then spent 31 of the next 38 months in the Navy in the South Pacific on two different Navy ships.
After being discharged from the Navy on Christmas Day 1945, Clyde returned to Salem, where he went back to work at Thomas Kay until being hired by the Engineering Department at the Oregon State Hospital. He worked in the Engineering Department, rising to the position of Chief Engineer and retiring after 35 years in 1982.
Clyde was very active in his church, the Judson Baptist Church in Salem. The last several years he has lived in assisted living, first at Cedar Village and then Farmington Square on Boone Road.
His wife of 68 years died in July 2012. One son, Dennis, died in 2001. Clyde is survived by three of his children: Gary (Lydia) Gilman, Eric (Suzanne) Gilman and Kathi (Rick) Brown. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Clyde will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 1230 S. Liberty Street in Salem, on June 23rd at 1PM. His internment will be held earlier for immediate family at Restlawn Memory Gardens.
