Donald McNeal (lovingly referred to as Don, Dad, and Grandpa) passed away peacefully on October 15 in Salem. He lived 77 love-filled years. Don is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karon, son Greg, daughter-in-law Julie, grandson Jacob and his wife Sierra, and brother William.
Don was born in Cottage Grove to Zelia and Charles McNeal. Before he started grade school his family moved to Eugene where he graduated from South Eugene High School. He continued his education at U of O while playing minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators. After earning his bachelor's degree, Don moved to Salem with his wife and son to begin his career with the Oregon Department of Revenue. He retired from the department after almost 30 years and then enjoyed his retirement years in Salem.
Don loved his family and sports (playing baseball, coaching Little League and Boys and Girls Club basketball, cheering on his son and grandson, and watching his favorites -- the Yankees and the U of O Ducks). He also enjoyed camping, playing cards, watching movies, and keeping an immaculate yard -- the weeds knew they had a very short life span in Don's flowerbeds. He was a man of few words who spoke volumes through his actions, showing his devotion to family, friends, and any professional or personal task.
Don did not wish to have a public memorial, but family welcomes those who wish to honor him to donate to the Parkinson's Foundation Pacific Northwest Chapter. Here's a link to donate:
