Dorothy "LaVerne" Waford Winegardner passed away Thursday, April 11th, in Oregon City, OR, after a brief illness. She was 91. The child of Theodore Marion Waford and Evelyn Matel Larsen, LaVerne was born March 9th, 1933 in Aberdeen, Idaho.
After graduating high school in Long Beach, CA, LaVerne attended Brigham Young University. One of the highlights of her college experience was her time with the Madrigal Singers, on tours that included a performance at the White House during a luncheon given by First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. In addition to raising her 5 children, LaVerne worked as an elementary school teacher and tutor. Her love of poetry and music was evident throughout her life, and she loved to write poems and share them with others, on subjects ranging from pansies to politics, and everything in between. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, LaVerne spent most of her later years attending the Brush Hills Ward, where she delighted in serving as Choir Director, Primary Music Leader, and other roles.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, brother Cloyde Allen Waford, husband Caryl Winegardner, and son Dallon (Suzy) Miles of Terrebonne, OR. She is survived by her children David (Sandra) Miles of Salem, OR, Lyssa (Kevin) Mincey of Caldwell, ID, Lorrie (Kerry) Potts of Sandpoint, ID, and Mara Ulloa of Salem, OR, along with 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held Friday, May 3rd at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
