Our mighty warrior and beloved son and brother, Douglas, went to Heaven to be with his grandparents on January 23rd, 2023.
At five months Doug was diagnosed with severe hemophilia B. Doug was infusing himself intravenously with his clotting factor by age 10. Despite this diagnosis Doug went on to live a normal and fantastic childhood. Doug was not only an independent thinker and influencer, he was funny, smart, creative, artistic and had a magnetic social aura.
Doug was born and raised in Salem attending Morningside, Leslie and South Salem High School. While as a student at SSHS Doug’s artwork was on display at the Bush Barn Gallery. The same year Doug was awarded first place in the SSHS Art Talent Show.
As a freshman studying Art at Portland State, Doug slipped on ice and was badly injured ending his time at PSU. Soon after recovering from his injury Doug secured an internship at Oni Press which specialized in graphic novels, alternative comics and was influential in the production of the Scott Pilgrim movie. Oni recognized Doug’s talents and gave him a full time position. While as an editorial assistant and award winning letterer at Oni Press, Doug contacted his many artistic friends to donate their art for a fundraiser benefitting the Hemophillia Foundation of Oregon. These efforts resulted in a contribution to the HFO of over $5000. Doug often said working at Oni Press were the happiest years of his adult life.
Doug had many joys in his life. He treasured his family and was adored by his younger brother Matt. Together and with a plethora of friends they enjoyed comics, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, riding bikes, and skateboarding. By age five Doug was a Dinosaur guru, able to read and recite every dinosaur’s name. Doug happily read toy packaging and descriptions to his brother Matt (who enjoyed it immensely).
Doug leaves behind his parents, Mark and Tracey Sherwood, his cherished brother Matt, his beloved grandpa Neil Sherwood, his aunts Timmie, Sandy and Susan, uncles Steve and Carl, cousins Trevor, Janelle, Lauren and Brady, and his faithful companion of thirteen years, his corgi Watson. Doug is predeceased by his grandparents Marilyn and Glen Brandt, and grandmother Nancy Sherwood.
We thank Salem Hospital for their excellent care and devotion to our entire family, as well as the Hemophilia Center during Doug’s younger years. Donations in Doug’s honor can be made to the Old Dog’s Sanctuary or your local humane society.
We would like to invite Doug’s friends and family to his Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 17th from 5:30-8:30 at Redhawk Winery in West Salem, 2995 Michigan City Lane NW Salem, Oregon 97304
