Edward Dale Bartlett Sr. Edward Dale Bartlett Sr. November 17, 1924 - January 23, 2010 KEIZER - Edward Dale Bartlett Sr. passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the age of 85. Ed blessed us all with his kind demeanor, and always approached life with a keen wit and sense of humor. Ed loved playing golf, cribbage, gardening, coin collecting, and restoring antique furniture. Until his recent illness, he worked out at the Keizer Courthouse Athletic Club every day. If possible, he attended every sporting event in which his children and grandchildren either participated in or coached. Ed was a past member of Keizer Exchange and Lions clubs. A third generation Oregonian, Ed grew up in Toledo, Ore., and attended Toledo High School. As a young man, Ed was an enthusiastic sports competitor, participating in football, basketball, boxing, and track. He attended college at Central Washington University, where he was a member of the football team, and earned a degree in Health and Physical Education. Ed's 1946 Central Washington University football team was elected into the school's hall of fame in 2000. As the quarterback of the 1946 team Ed was known as "crazy legs." He spoke of how one of his proudest moments was when he took a quarterback sneak 90 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Ed went on to earn his Master's degree in Education at Oregon State University. Ed enlisted in the Navy, and served his country during the Second World War. He married Colleen Mae Smith in 1947. They made their home in Oregon shortly thereafter. They resided in Salem and moved to Keizer in 1964, where he devoted himself to raising his four children, and doting on his five grandchildren. For 31 years, Ed served as coach, teacher, athletic director, and eventually acting superintendent of Chemawa Indian School. He retired in 1982. Ed would often fondly reminisce about the achievements of the many students he taught, and youth he coached over the years. He is survived by his wife Colleen; sister, Mary Alice Hale; children, Connie (Pitts - husband Barry), Ed Jr., John (wife Katherine), and David (wife Micki); grandchildren, Brendan (Pitts), Sarah, Garrett, Drew and Jesiah; and many other beloved family members, as well as a large network of friends. The Bartlett family wishes to express their gratitude for all of the people involved in ensuring Ed's final days were comfortable and dignified. A private family memorial service will be held at Restlawn Memory Gardens. A public tribute honoring Ed's memory may be announced at a future date. Ed's family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Cancer Society at
