Ellen Louise Small

January 18, 1929 — July 22, 2018

Ellen Small, 89 of Milwaukie, OR, died July 22, 2018, with her daughter by her side in Clackamas, Oregon.

A visitation will be held at Restlawn Funeral home on Friday August 3 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM .  A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 4, at Salem First Baptist Church in Salem, Oregon at 1:00 PM. Interment will be Monday, August 6, at Restlawn Memorial Park, at 2:00 PM


Ellen was born January 18, 1929, in Starkweather, North Dakota to A.J. and Helen McLarty. The youngest of five children Ellen lived in North Dakota until age 10,then her family moved to Polk County, Oregon, in the early 1940’s.

Ellen married her high school sweetheart on June 23, 1950.  They were married for 10 years.  Twenty five years later, she met and married Lovell Yung.  They were married until he died in 1982.  Twenty five years later, she married a close friend Paul Small.  They were married until his death in 2011.
Ellen was active in church and she attended Salem Alliance, and Salem 1st Baptist in Salem for many years; most recently she attended Tri City Baptist Temple in Gladstone, OR. She graduated from Monmouth High School in Monmouth, OR in 1947. She attended college at Cascade College in Portland.  Ellen worked for the Department of Education as a documents clerk until retirement.

Ellen enjoyed her friends and was interested in people. It didn’t matter if you were related or not, she was honestly interested in your life and eager to engage in conversation with you. She had the ability to make you feel as if you were the only person in the room, her primary focus.

Ellen Small is survived by her children, Bev Sawyer, of Gladstone and Clifford Allen Hassler of Salem, and 5 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren She also had many stepchildren and step grandchildren.
