Grace was born 22 January 1917 in Vale, OR, the daughter of Maud J. (Clancy) and Paul G. Freeman. She lived in Vale, Yoncalla and Portland before moving to the family farm near Rickreall in 1928. She married R.F. (Tiger) Herzberg 1 June 1940. She was preceded in death by husband Tiger; son Ray G. Herzberg; grandsons Derek and Deron Herzberg; brothers Harold an Gerald Freeman; sisters Mary (Freeman) Davis and Willetta (Freeman) Bannister. She is survived by son Lee and Ruthellen (Schwietert) Herzberg; daughter-in-law Mary (Belliveau) Herzberg; 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Grace started teaching in 1936 at the Polk Station school near Dallas and spent many years teaching in Willamina starting in 1947. In 1978 she made up her mind to quit teaching when she started teaching the grandchildren of her earlier students. She was still getting cards from former students letting her know that she was their favorite teacher. Many remembered her reading to them and said she instilled a love of reading in them forever. Grace and Tiger lived in Willamina on the corner of 1st and B Streets for 57 years until Tiger's death. Grace lived her last years with Lee and Ruthellen. Her great joys were family, friends, and former students. She was an avid reader until her eyesight failed. Pinochle was her famorite game and she never did stop doing crossword puzzles and word scrambles. We will miss her laughter, cheerful disposition and unconditional love.
