Hubert (Herb) Slegers was born just outside of Amsterdam on May 27, 1923. As a young man he worked in a bakery, grain mill, his fathers' barge and an uncle's trucking firm. He was married to Aletta Oostwouder on April 6, 1949. On April 6, 1954 they immigrated by ship and train with two sons to California. After working on dairy farms in California, he rented a dairy farm with his cousin. Later he purchased a dairy farm in Newberg, Oregon in 1964. Another farm was purchased in Dayton in 1971. In 1978 he sold the Newberg farm and purchased a house on Eola Hills Drive and a storage business in Independence. Hubert continued to be involved in the farm and storage businesses for many years. He was a longtime member and elder in Sunnyslope Christian Reformed Church in Salem and continued to live on Eola Hills Drive until 2008 when they moved into Capitol Manor. Hubert enjoyed reading history, watching news and financial shows as well as traveling the world. He had many friends in church and other friends who were fellow Dutch immigrants. He was not fond of machinery. On the farm he preferred to milk cows and attend to the financial matters. Hubert was a likable man who avoided controversy, was pleasant and particularly honest with everyone. He was preceded in death by a son Marvin in 1970. He is survived by his wife Aletta; sons Arie and Bill; four grandchildren and three step grandchildren.
