James A. Harris II

May 24, 1945 — January 26, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James A. Harris II, known affectionately to family and friends as Jim, who departed this life on January 26, 2025, in Salem, Oregon. Jim was born on May 24, 1945, in Denver, Colorado, to James A. Harris and Mary M. Whitfield. He lived a full and impactful life that spanned nearly eight decades, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and camaraderie.

Jim's family was his cornerstone. He is survived by his beloved wife, Delores Harris, and his children: son Mark Harris and daughter Shannon Lane. He was a proud brother to Butch Harris of Farmington, NM, and Kathleen Hilterman of Houston, TX. Jim also cherished his stepsister, Nadine Daniel, of Farmington, NM. He embraced his role as a father-in-law to Bev Harris, and was adored by his granddaughter, Blair Harris, and great-granddaughter, Brailey. Jim's love extended to his son-in-law, Mike Lane, and welcomed his grandsons, Nathaniel and Jeremy Lane, along with his great-grandsons, Liam and Carter. He also held a special place in his heart for Delores' children: Roger Bradford, Tammy Crawford, and Tracie Rye.

Jim was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving from January 18, 1965, until August 1, 1986. He retired as a First Sergeant with numerous commendations, including three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. Though he rarely spoke of his medals due to the memories they conjured of wartime sacrifice, those who knew him recognized the honor and bravery they represented. Jim's military career primarily involved aviation, where he began as a helicopter door gunner and mechanic in Vietnam. His expertise and dedication later led him to author a maintenance manual for the OV-1 Mohawk military observation airplane, demonstrating his commitment to excellence and service.

After retiring from the Army, Jim worked as a diesel mechanic, a skill he honed in his youth at his father's repair shop, and later at the Salem Main Post Office in their vehicle repair facility. He humbly turned down promotions, preferring to contribute without the burden of supervision.

Jim's passions were as varied as they were vibrant. He found joy in riding his Harley trike, often hitting the open road with friends and family, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. He loved "wind therapy" and found purpose in participating in poker runs and rides benefiting veterans. Jim was a keen fisherman and crabber who found delight in the catch, despite his peculiar aversion to eating fish or seafood himself. His laughter and stories filled elk camp, known affectionately among friends as the "Salem Hilton," where he enjoyed camaraderie and mischief, occasionally letting legal animals pass by in favor of a more leisurely camping experience.

Jim was known for his gruff demeanor but possessed a heart as big as his love for his country. His home was a refuge for those in need, whether it was friends or family without a place to go. His nickname in the Army, "Hammer Harris," reflected both his commanding presence and his favorite saying, "Don't force it, get a bigger hammer," which often brought laughter to those around him.

Preceding him in death was his first wife, Jil Harris, who passed away in 2011. They were married in 1967 shortly after Jim returned from his third tour in Vietnam. In 2013, he found love again with Delores Hedlund, and together they embarked on new adventures filled with motorcycle rides, camping, and boating trips.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to organizations close to Jim's heart: the Humane Society, which helped him adopt many beloved pets, and Honoring Heroes, the group behind the charitable rides he so passionately participated in.

Jim would want to be remembered as a patriot who, despite disagreements with politicians, held an unwavering love for his country. He cherished the recent cultural shift toward appreciating military service and honoring the sacrifices of veterans, a stark contrast to the reception he experienced upon returning from Vietnam.

A private funeral service will be held with close family and friends. All are invited to celebrate Jim's life and legacy, keeping his spirit alive in their hearts with a reception at Restlawn Funeral Home at 201 Oak Grove Rd NW Salem Or 97304 on March 7th 2025 at 3pm in the reception hall.

He may have departed this world, but the memories of his laughter, kindness, and dedication will forever remain. Thank you, Jim, for your service, your love, and the countless memories you gave us. You will be deeply missed.
