James E Smith

Jim was born and raised in Salem Oregon, to Ernest W. Smith & Helen L Weber, Jim had one older brother Larry. Jim grew up in the Bakery Business, His parents owned and operated Smith Baking Co, Salem OR, both Jim and his brother worked with their parents to keep the business striving. After the death of their father, Ernest, the family decided to sell the company to Franz Bakery and Jim went with the package. Jim enjoyed the bakery business and retired after 25 years with Franz. After semi-retiring, Jim started volunteering for the Keizer Police department and then decided to get into armed security, so at 60 years of age he got his DPST license and went to work for a few years working security, he just loved wearing a uniform. Jim graduated from North Salem High School in 1962, In 1972 Jim received his Honorable Discharge from the National Guard, he was very proud of being a veteran. Jim also had a liking for cars; he enjoyed very much going to car shows with his buddies and shooting the breeze. His Laser Jet Red Mustang “BOSS 232” was his pride and joy, winning multiple trophies and awards. However, once Covid shut down car shows, Jim got into his next venture: Guns. He very much enjoyed spending time at the gun range and became friends with the owners of TRITAC in Salem. Jim was a lifelong member of the Keizer Elks club.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Debbie Smith of Keizer. He is also survived by his brother Larry Smith of Salem and 2 nephews. Jim had numerous children, including his son, Greg & his wife Jane Smith of Silver Springs MD, their 3 children, daughter Lisa Smith, of Troutdale OR, her 3 children, 1 great grandchild. daughter Angela Smith of Mammoth Springs AR, her 3 children, son Michael & Jacquie Dietrich of Mill City OR, and 1 child, and Nathan Johnson of Monmouth OR and his 2 children. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Helen Smith. He was loved by all and will be missed tremendously. Service will be held at Rest lawn Funeral home. Tues June 11th 8:30 Viewing, service at 9:30-10:30 and10:30 to graveside. Refreshments served after the service.
