Joe Winter (1924-2018)
Joe Lee Winter, 93, passed away peacefully in Salem, Ore. on November 8, 2018. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 2pm in the Capital Manor Auditorium in Salem.
Joe was born in Hoquiam, Wash. on December 15, 1924 to Leck and Laura (Cattron) Winter. Joe skipped his graduation ceremony from Redmond High School (Ore.) in 1943 to enlist in the Army Air Corps. His cadet training took him to Huntington, W. Va., where Joe met his future wife, Lucille Galloway, at a dance. They started corresponding via letters when he was transferred to Oklahoma, and were married in Enid, Okla. shortly after on May 20, 1945.
They settled back in Huntington, but Joe was encouraged by his boss to pursue his dream to go to dental school. The couple moved to Baltimore, where Joe attended University of Maryland dental school, and the couple had their first child, Bruce, in 1950. Son Marc joined them in 1953 during time Joe practiced dentistry at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz. The family relocated to Bend, Ore. in 1957, where Joe opened a dental practice and welcomed daughter, Kim. Joe accepted a dentist position with the state of Oregon in 1969, and the family moved to a home in Keizer, Ore., where Joe and Lucille lived for over 45 years.
After retirement in 1986, Joe embraced several hobbies and activities in the Salem-Keizer community. His favorites including: piloting his beloved Piper Tri Pacer airplane, playing bridge, wood carving, spending time with his family and grandchildren, and watching his wife line dance. He will be remembered for being a devoted husband, dad and "Papa," and for his joyful spirit, generous nature, vivid storytelling and discernible palate.
Joe is survived by his wife Lucille, sister Marilyn Hills (Ken) of Nampa, Id., children Bruce Winter (Lynn) of Philadelphia, Marc Winter (Jan) of Claremont, Calif., and Kim Higham (Dave) of Phoenix, Ariz., 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
