SALEM- John Glascock, 88, of Salem, patriarch of a large, loving family, died peacefully at home September 17. He was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and attended Pomona College, Antioch College, Washington State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. He served in the Coast Guard in Southeastern Alaska and the Aleutians in World War II, separating in 1946 as a Lieutenant USCGR. He worked for Griffin Chemical Company, and in the Trust Department of American Trust Company in San Francisco. For 37 years, he was a supervisor, superintendent and divisional manager of five operating divisions for State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Berkeley, California and in Salem, retiring in 1984. He was a charter member and past president of Salem City Club, a West Salem Rotary Club member, and a Paul Harris Fellow, chairman of the Oregon Insurance Guarantee Association, president of Orchard Heights Water Association, chairman of the Oregon Employees' Suggestion Awards Board, chairman of Oregon Corrections Industries Board, Salem Audubon Society member; served on various state advisory committees and task forces, was a charter member of the Fair & Clean Energy Coalition, and chair of Oregon AARP State Legislative Committee and coordinator of its Capitol City Task Force. He enjoyed reading, music, camping, hiking, fishing, birding, and traveling. His first wife, Lola, died in May, 1971. Survivors include his wife, Marie, whom he married in July, 1972; his daughters, Beth Glascock of Salem, Joan Young of Milwaukie, and Barbara Langford of Lebanon; and son, John Glascock II of Sedona, Arizona; stepchildren Barney Burch of Olympia, Washington, Ken Burch of Juneau, Alaska, and Rebecca Burch-Young of Olympia; grandchildren, Kyle, Thom, and Ethan Young, Tim and John Langford, and Sarah Young; a sister, Dorothy Rioux of Tualatin; and brother, Hardin R. Jr. of Portland. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 19 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. Private interment will be at the Willamette National Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the church or Oregon Public Broadcast.
