Jack was born in Chicago, IL to Frank and Mildred Hoppe. The family moved to So. Cal. when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Pomona Catholic High in 1956 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. He left the Navy in 1966 and began his law enforcement career as a Deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office, then Chief of Police of Blair, NE before moving to Oregon to join the Board of Public Safety Standards and Training where he assisted in training law enforcement personnel.
Jack was an active member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church and served in several ministries, including the SVdP Society. He was also a board member of the Salem area SVdP conference. He was a volunteer umpire for Little League, even after suffering a below the knee amputation in 1990 due to cancer. Jack was well known for his wonderful sense of humor and sharing stories of his childhood in Chicago.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; sons John (Sarah), Steve; daughter, Anne Templeton (Tim); sister, Mary Sheppard; 5 grandsons and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation and Rosary will be at 10:30 am on Friday, January 31, 2014 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, Salem, OR. A luncheon reception in the Parish Hall will follow. Funeral arrangements and private inurnment by Restlawn Funeral and Memory Gardens.
