John "Jack" Sturgeon

July 11, 1932 — June 20, 2011

SALEM - John Lewis "Jack" Sturgeon of Salem passed away June 20, 2011 from complications following surgery.
Jack was born in Astoria, OR to Arthur and Mildred Sturgeon, the eldest of two children. He attended schools in Seaside, and after service in the Air Force, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Larson, together rearing four children.
He later married Rose Earls, moving to Salem in 1976. Their 26-year marriage ended with Rose's death in 2002. As a young man, Jack worked in logging, various phases of the oil business, and new and used car sales, always in the Seaside, Tillamook, and Astoria areas. In the early 1960s, he began work for the Sunbeam Co., eventually becoming a route salesman for Franz Baking Co., a position he held for 20 years until his retirement in 1994. He earned the company's Salesman of the Year Award in 1985 and 1990.
Active in retirement, Jack drove a Salem-Keizer School District bus route for children with special health care needs for 7 years, and after that continued to serve the district and its children as a crossing guard at Auburn Elementary School for 8 more years. In addition to his love for children, Jack filled his life with music, classic cars, model railroading, a multitude of pets, the Portland Trailblazers, and gardening. But most of all he cherished family and the abiding friendships developed and maintained over a lifetime, from early childhood to the nursing staff of his final stay at Salem Hospital.
Jack is survived by his loving soul mate, Mary Ellen; his brother, Ted (Melody) of Seaside; three sons, Kent (Becky) of Banks, Ron of Seaside, Guy (Kathy) of Beaverton; daughter, Jana of Gresham; 3 stepsons; 2 stepdaughters; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Shirley, and second wife, Rose.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, June 27, at 2:00 pm at Morningside United Methodist Church, 3674 12th Street SE, Salem. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Jack's name to the Health and Dental Center, Boys and Girls Club of Salem, 1395 Summer Street, Salem, OR 97301.
