John Christian Williams
March 10, 1922 - September 20, 2014
SALEM - John was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda to whom he had been married for 64 years. They raised one surviving son, Jon (Judy) Williams of Lakeside, Oregon.
As a young boy, John and his now deceased brother Lewis grew up in a remote part of Coos County, living the pioneering life on one of the last homesteads issued by the government. He recounted watching the North Bend Bridge being built and at one time, while on the ferry, he saw a worker fall to his death.
John was a proud Marine during World War II, and while fighting on Iwo Jima, he was near the first flag rising on Mt. Suribachi.
After the war, John became an Oregon State Police trooper. He began as a driver and bodyguard for Governor McKay. Serving over 39 years in employment, he moved to several stations as he continued to be promoted. He finally reached the pinnacle of the rank of Superintendent in Salem and held the position for many years until his retirement.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. For many years he lived adjacent to the 9th tee at Illahe Hills Golf Club, where he was a member. On the early morning of September 20, John passed peacefully from age-related causes.
