Salem – A beautiful and loving soul passed away unexpectedly at home in Salem, Oregon on July 11, 2024, just a few months shy of his 80th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sylvia E. Scantlin, four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Ken was born on October 1, 1944, in Iola, Kansas to Lester and Buelah Scantlin; the youngest of four sisters and one brother. After his father’s death, they relocated to Portland, OR in 1958.
A decorated veteran of the United States Army, Ken served his country with honor and distinction for over 28 years, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War, where he received several commendations, including the Bronze Star for Valor.
After retiring from the military, Ken was instrumental in training the Saudi Arabian military in armor systems. He was also actively involved in the local American Red Cross, helping senior citizens live a more productive life. During this time-period, Ken also held down a full-time job working for a national building products company, where he traveled the country.
Marked by his magnanimity, altruistic spirt, and unwavering devotion to duty, Ken’s positive impact and helpful nature in assisting those around him, coupled with his love for his family and comrades, will be warmly recollected by many. Ken’s enduring legacy of service and selflessness will perpetuate in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held on October 1, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or a veteran’s organization of your choice in Kenneth’s honor.
