Kurt Leo Bauer passed away quietly on January 22 at his home in Powell Valley Retirement Center, Portland.
Kurt was born February 13, 1920 in Bluegrass, North Dakota. He grew up on a family farm with 2 sisters, 4 brothers, a step-sister and his parents. He attended school through 8th grade and went on to be a great reader and life-long learner. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on the International Peace Garden in North Dakota until 1938.
In October 1941 Kurt joined the Army Air Corps. He was a radio operator in China, Burma, India theater of operations, where his contribution involved facilitating communication of important war time events and activities.
Kurt was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to North Dakota. There he met Anna Keller, and they were married in June 9, 1946. They had 3 children over the next 4 years. Kurt worked at lumber mills in Sweet Home. Later he became a carpenter, and eventually, due to his hard work and leadership skills, a foreman working on bridges throughout Oregon.
Anna passed away in 1974. Kurt married Fran Peterson in 1975. In 1989 he married Evelyn Flora who passed away in 2010. He traveled extensively after his retirement in 1982, visiting relatives in North Dakota and spending winters in Arizona. He made friends wherever he went.
Kurt enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, dancing and playing cards. He left lasting memories and shared his carpentry skills by building a scale model barn, tables and games to share with everyone. He had a sharp mind and was aware of current events throughout his life.
In his memory, donations may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or the Salvation Army.
