Lucille Winter (1924-2023)
Lucille Cobin Galloway Winter, 99, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Salem, Ore. on June 21, 2023. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 2pm in the Capital Manor Auditorium in Salem.
Lucille was born in Huntington, W.Va. on May 22, 1924 to the late Sam and Myra (Cobin) Galloway. She frequently reminisced on childhood memories of her two sisters Marian and Jean and brother Jimmy, especially those that included singing along to their father’s guitar. It was at a dance in Huntington where Lucille met Joe Winter, a young Army Air Corps Cadet from Redmond, Ore. The two started corresponding via letters when Joe transferred to Oklahoma, and soon Lucille joined him in Enid, Okla., where they were married on May 20, 1945.
The couple soon moved to Baltimore for Joe to attend dental school, where they welcomed sons Bruce in 1950 and Marc in 1953. The family settled in Bend, Ore. in 1957 and shortly after welcomed daughter Kim. In 1969, the family moved to a home in Keizer, Ore., where Lucille and Joe lived for over 45 years.
Lucille embraced several hobbies and activities in her later years, including line dancing, playing bridge and cooking her famous recipes for her family and grandchildren. She welcomed everyone she met with love, acceptance and a special kindness that can only be attributed to her West Virginian upbringing. She will be remembered for being a trusty “co-pilot” to Joe, a devoted "Mema" to her family, and by her nickname: “The Ivy Way Fox.”
Lucille is preceded in death by her husband Joe Winter, daughter Kim Higham, son Marc Winter, sisters Marian Boggs Gill and Jean Hayes, and brother James Galloway. She is survived by son Bruce Winter (Lynn) of Clermont, Fla., daughter-in-law Jan Winter of Claremont, Calif., 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
