Monica was born in Springfield, Illinois, the only child of Cecil and Helen Shoup. As a young child, she and her family moved to California. Monica attended high school in Inglewood, California, where she met her future husband Norm Garrison. They were married in May 1946. Over the next 17 years, Monica and Norm made their home in Encino, California, where their six children were born. In 1963, the family moved to Oregon.
Following the death of her husband, Monica moved to Mt. Angel Towers. Monica had converted to Catholicism at a young age and her faith was very important to her. Her move to the Towers allowed her to actively practice her faith on a daily basis in addition to providing a community of many wonderful friends.
Monica loved spending time with her grand children, great –grand children and going to the coast with her daughters. She also enjoyed returning to California to visit close friends.
Monica was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Norm, and by her son, David. Monica is survived by her children, Michael, Mary, Norma, Helen and Eileen, and many grandchildren and great-grand children.
Monica was a beautiful woman, a loving mother and a good friend. She will be missed.
Rosary is at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, followed by Mass at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 721 Chemeketa St NE, Salem, Oregon. Interment will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens. Donations may be made to Catholic charities.
