Norman "Norm" William Rose, 78, died peacefully at home on April 30, after a long battle with emphysema and cancer.
Norm was born in Oregon City, Oregon, on December 3, 1935. He was the third of five children born to Ralph and Martha Rose. Typical farm boys, Norm and his brothers were a rowdy bunch and he bore a scar from a
brick on his forehead as evidence. They learned to work as hard as they played; a trait that defined Norm's work ethic. He attended Oregon City High School in Oregon City, Oregon. Norm met Carolyn shortly after completing his two years of service in the Army. They married in Oregon City on February 1, 1964. Together, they raised two sons and Norm's daughter from a previous marriage.
Norm and Carolyn lived in the Salem area for most of their 50-year marriage. Norman enjoyed a successful 45-year career in the hearing aid industry and was well-respected by his colleagues. Board certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences, he spent nine consecutive years serving on the Oregon Advisory Council on Hearing Aids under the governorships of Barbara Roberts and John Kitzhaber. An avid golfer and fly-fisherman, Norm rarely missed an opportunity for one or the other.
When his family was young, Norm maintained a pilot's license and enjoyed flying family and friends on special trips as far away as Texas. His family has especially fond memories of a trip to San Antonio. Norm never met a stranger and quickly put everyone he met at ease with his gift of gab. Waitresses, office customers, and grocery clerks were all quickly charmed by his jovial conversation. Norm and Carolyn Attended Grace Baptist
Church in Salem where he was well-known and loved by all.
Norm is survived by his wife Carolyn; his three children, Colleen Brandford (Walter), Matt (Debbie), and Tim (Brenda); nine grandchildren, his brother Roy, and sisters Ruth Perkins and Becky Wilder. He was
preceded in death by his brother Gordon and his parents.
A celebration of Norm's life will be held at Grace Baptist Church on May 24, at 10:30 AM. Norm will be laid to rest in Willamette National Cemetery, in Portland, Oregon
