Ovid (Doc) passed away on May 6, 2016 at the age of 91, 3 weeks shy of 92. Ovid was born in Fort Scott Kansas to Ethel & Charles Long of Blue Mound Kansas. The Long family moved to Independence, Oregon in 1934.
Ovid graduated from Independence High School in 1942. He attended Oregon College of Education in Monmouth a year prior to America's declaration of war and entry into WWII. Ovid joined the Navy in 1943. He was trained as a medical corpsman and spent 3 years in South Pacific War Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946.
On his return he married Virginia Link July 8, 1947. Together they had three sons, Carl, Steve and Paul. Ovid during the ensuing years was able to earn his bachelor's degree from Oregon State College.
Ovid spent his working career of over 35 years as a local farmer and agri-business man in the Independence area. He was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks No. 1950 most of his adult life, a founding member of the Oregon Fruit and Vegetable Association, and early in his farming a member of the Hop Growers Association.
Ovid & Virginia enjoyed traveling having visited many interesting places around the world. Ovid's favorite destination was Kona Hawaii where he traveled every winter this last winter was no exception.
Virginia passed away on April 5, 2010. Ovid is survived by three sons, four grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren, and a great granddaughter.
Coffee and cake Celebration of Life will be at Green Villa Barn, 321 Independence Highway from 2:00-4:00 PM Saturday 25th of June.
