Paul was born into the renowned Wedel family that founded the Salem Hospital and raised in Oregon. He married Echo Campbell in 1941 prior to entering the service. They were married over 50 years and had a son, David.
Paul was in the US Marines in WW II and served in the South Pacific 1941-1945. He drove a tank and participated in the battles of Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian in the Marshall Islands and was in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Paul drove log trucks and at one time owned his own company. He later worked for Reddaway Trucking Company and retired in 1984.
He met Gloria Read in 1996. They were married in 1997 and enjoyed 17 years of marriage. In 1998 they were able to take a lifetime cruise to Alaska, which they both enjoyed. Paul was the love of her life.
Paul enjoyed raising cows on his farm, hunting, fishing, word puzzles and had many dogs he loved. Tipper will surely miss him.
He was preceded in death by his wife Echo; two brothers, Ben Jr. and Frank; as well as a stepson, Bill Read. Paul is survived by his wife Gloria, son David, granddaughter Sara, stepdaughters Rilene and Lauree, and numerous step-grand and great-grandchildren.
Public visitation will be held on Thursday, May 15th, 12:00-4:00 pm at Restlawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16th at 11:00 am at Restlawn Funeral Home, 201 Oak Grove Rd, Salem, OR 97304. Paul to receive full military honors.
