Ray Charles Banister, 81, was born April 12, 1942, and went to be with his Lord and Savior March 6, 2024.
Long time resident of the Salem-Keizer area, and living his final days in Dallas, Oregon, he was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Ray served his country in the US Army, active-duty October 1960-1963, deployed to Korea (1961-62), then reserve-duty through October 1966.
He worked for the State of Oregon throughout his entire professional career of over 30 years, beginning in May 1964, and retiring June 1994.
Ray was an avid computer programmer both professionally and personally, spawned by his introduction to computer science through his employment with the State of Oregon, when promoted first as a computer operator, then programmer in 1968. Ray also enjoyed photography since his youth, and studied many other topics throughout his lifetime, including biblical history, foreign languages, and music theory (including writing several of his own gospel compositions). During a time in the 70's, he was also a citizen band radio (CB) operator and enthusiast, eventually designing and printing QSL cards for many of his CB friends and acquaintances.
Preceded in death by his father, Reverend Kenneth Nathan Banister, mother, Lillie Mable (Butler) Banister, his only brother, William Nathan Banister, and second wife, Rochelle (Bolin) Banister.
Ray is survived by son, Mark Stephen Banister, Mark's wife Jennifer Lynn (Calhoun) Banister, grand-daughter, Natalie Jean Banister, step-daughter Dr. Damara (Goff) Paris, Damara's partner David Hoover, step-daughter Shery (Goff) Hollingsworth, step-son, Wendell Goff, Wendell's wife Elaine Goff, and many step-grandchildren (Conner Goff, Ben Goff, Sekoia Paris, David Goff, Jr., Daniel Goff, Joe Shannon, and Jessica Shannon).
He was buried March 12, beside his wife Rochelle, at Camp Creek Cemetery in Springfield, Oregon, with Military Honors.
