Ray W. Thomas
February 10, 1928 - May 30, 2015
Ray Thomas, a long time Salem businessman, died peacefully in his sleep at age 87. Ray was born in Jordon, Montana and was the child of Inez and Wilbur Thomas. Ray attended High School in Saint Ignatius, Montana and then enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps. in 1945 where he earned the rank of Sergeant. Following his discharge in 1948 he moved to Missoula, Montana where he began a career in the office machine business. He soon met his wife Joan and they eventually moved to Salem in 1962.
Ray continued his career as an office machine salesman with Cooke Stationary for over 20 years and also started his own business; Thomas Leasing Company. Ray's favorite past time was collecting antique typewriters and he refurbished hundreds of them during his lifetime. He became an active member with the Salem Optimist Club where he remained a volunteer for over 25 years.
Ray was a gentleman in every way and a friend to all who knew him. He was always there to lend a helping hand and he will be missed. He is survived by his wife Joan whom he married 52 years ago, his son Danny, and daughter Diane. A graveside memorial service will be held Friday June 5th at 2PM. at RestLawn Cemetery which is located on the Salem-Dallas highway in West Salem.
