SALEM - Richard was born in Portland and graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day. He worked at the DMV most of 30 years, retiring from ODOT. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, traveling, and especially, his grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, William Alton and Lillian Naomi (Ricketts) Byrd; brother Alton Robin Byrd; and an infant daughter. Survivors include wife, Kathleen, whom he married August 21, 1970; daughter, SanDee (Andrew) Taylor; son, Corey (Sheri) Byrd; daughter, Chelby (Tim) Thies; two sisters, Carol Locke and Kay Cant; and grandchildren, Ashlee Voelker, Zachary and Jessica Byrd, and Macarthy and Monroe Thies. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, August 17th at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salem. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association or National Kidney Foundation. Arrangements under direction of Restlawn Funeral Home.
