SALEM - Ric McKenzie passed away at his home in Salem, Ore. on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer.
Though a long-time resident of the Willamette Valley, Ric was born in Kalispell, Montana. He graduated from North Salem High School in 1972.
Ric was very active in the community and was a co-founder of the Salem Community Drum Circle in 1997 as well as volunteering every year at the Oregon Country Fair as the "Oven Master" for the Phoenix Rising Cookie booth which donates all of the yearly proceeds to community charities.
Ric loved working with people and had experience as a concrete finisher, Safeway bakery manager, lineman and manager for Kettle Chips, limousine driver and also as a service technician for air/water machines throughout Oregon and Washington. Yet, if you asked him what he did you would most often hear, "I make people smile" and he did.
Ric is survived by his wife, Wendy L. McKenzie of Salem; his son, Richard McKenzie III of Salem; his sisters, Tarrah Barker of Salem and Tami Weir of Albany; his former wives, Ginger McKenzie of Salem and Jackie Ardary McKenzie of Keizer; and service dog and adopted "son", Simba.
There is no way to know just how many lives Ric touched with his humor, drumming, motorcycle riding, constant readiness for new adventures and "full body" hugs! A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 28th at the Scottish Rite Temple located at 4090 S. Commercial Street in Salem, OR at 1:00 PM.
All who have shared in the joy and wonder that Ric spread through his life are invited to attend and drummers are especially welcome! Ric has requested that any memorial donations be made to either the Marion and Polk County Food Share program or America's VetDogs.
