Ruby Evelyn (Hallett) Cooper
April 5, 1918 - February 6, 2013
Salem - Ruby Evelyn (Hallett) Cooper, 94 passed away peacefully of natural causes on February 6, 2013 in the Salem Hospital with family by her side. Ruby was born April 5, 1918 in the family farm house in Hoosier Hollow, near Richland Center, Wisconsin. She was the first born to Samuel Roy Hallett and Esther Amelia (Schmidt) Hallett. Ruby attended Hoosier Hollow Elementary School and after the eighth grade stayed home to help care for and raise her siblings. Ruby is preceded in death by her younger sisters Mabel Maxine Klebs and June Bessie Carden and her brother, Glen George Hallett. She is survived by her sister Betty Lou Cooper.
Ruby married George Frederick Cooper on June 24, 1942 in Richland Center, Wisconsin when he was home on furlough from World War II. While he was in the Service, they had a son, Frederick Roy. Ruby and "Freddie" lived on the Hallett farm until George got out of the Service and the young family lived on a farm for ten years in Eagle Corners, Wisconsin. While there, daughters Linda Lou and Donna Mae along with son, Gene Lee, were born. In 1957, Ruby and the family moved to Salem, Oregon.
In addition to raising and caring for her children, Ruby was a baby sitter in Salem for the children of neighbors and friends and her home was a school children block house. She did this for many years, making lots of friends. One of her passionate pastimes was sewing, making clothes for children as well as dolls. She made many quilts. Ruby loved to cross-stitch and crochet. Her friends and family have many of her quilts, cross-stitch, and crochet pieces of work. Ruby was a devoted diary writer making entries, no matter how trivial for the last 50 years. She has drafted "Ruby's Memories" that someday may be published. She was also a repository of family genealogy and photographs.
A recent memorable occasion for Ruby was the celebration of her and George's 70th wedding anniversary last June. Ruby is survived by her husband George, son Fred and his wife Cherie, daughter Linda and her husband Tom Berkeland, daughter Donna and her husband Bill Weaver, and son Gene and his wife Eva. She is survived by grandchildren Derick Cooper and wife Fran, Shelley Cooper and husband Chris Hanel, and Heidi Cooper and husband Stace Karussos; Blake Berkeland, Brianna Berkeland and husband Chase Berry; and Kelsey Weaver and husband Matt Weigel. She is also survived by great-grand children Emma Cooper, Ethan Cooper, Kylee Hanel, Caelyn Hanel, Ariana Karussos, and Olivia Weigel.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 11 at 1 pm at Restlawn Funeral Home, with interment at Restlawn Memory Gardens.
