SALEM - Shirley was born to Ronald & Florence Hall in Ipswich South Dakota the oldest of four children. When she was 13 The Great Depression along with bad weather and a grasshopper plague forced the family to sell what little they had and move from the farm to Oregon for a fresh start. Shirley went from a one room school to Parrish Jr. High, and graduated from Salem High School. She married Carl Komyate who then shipped off to the South Pacific during Word War II. When Carl returned from the war they settled in Salem. Soon she had two children and became a homemaker. She was a dedicated wife and mother who worked hard canning food, sewing clothes, and generally caring for her family. For years she worked in the fields picking fruit, ran picking crews, and trained up berry canes to earn extra money. A devout Christian, Shirley was a charter member of Halbert Baptist Church where she worked as the church secretary and ran church youth programs for decades influencing the lives of many. In 1970 she took a secretarial job for the Conservative Baptist Association and worked there for twenty years. Prayer and hard work were her answers for most of life's challenges. She loved flowers. Her yard was always a showcase of color. Shirley was happy with her lot in life and complaining was not a trait of hers. She was the family matriarch and loved to host large gatherings .Christmas was her favorite time and giving gifts was in her nature. She loved to crochet, stitch, and bake cookies.
She was preceded in death by husband Carl in 1995 and brother Larry in 2003. She is survived by her daughter Mary Jo Gross (Donald), son John Komyate, grandchildren Melissa Gross, Nathan Gross, Rachel Criscio,(Massimo), Sarah Rainwater (Daniel), David Komyate and Stephanie Komyate. She has one great grandchild, Nora Criscio.
