Shirley Enid Wood

May 16, 1923 — November 28, 2022

Shirley Enid (Rice) Wood was born in Florence Oregon May 16, 1923 to Olaf and Annie Laurie (Elnan) Rice. She was the eldest in the family that later included Raymond, June, and Lois, who all predeceased her.
She grew up on the family dairy farm on the Siuslaw River in Mapleton Oregon where she attended school and where her life-long love of nature was born.
She attended Oregon College of Education (now WOU) and graduated with her teaching degree. It was on a visit home from college that she met Robert Wood, also a school teacher, who was working in the Civilian Public Service and stationed at Waldport. They were married in August 1946 in the Mapleton Evangelical Church where they met.
They both taught in Lane County. They moved to Keizer in 1950, and then to a 12-acre farm east of Salem in 1963. Shirley found her calling as a kindergarten teacher working at Salem Private School and Grace Lutheran in Salem.
Shirley and Robert had 4 children, Carol, Connie, Brian, and Kevin, and later inducted into their family Ken Fischer, Sam Summers, Shirlee Ann Wood, Bob Baynes, and Sonia Wood. Now 8 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren have life-long happy memories of Grandma Wood, sometimes known as “Granny.” Shirley loved and cared for Robert Wood until his passing in 2007.
Shirley was active in Salem Evangelical Church until her move to Friendsview in 2005, when she attended Grace Baptist in Newberg.
Her adventures took her to Brazil twice, and to Norway in 2001, where she visited the farms where her grandparents had lived. She encouraged her children to see the world as she did, seeing beauty in unexpected places. She understood the value of fresh local fruit the way few people are able to. She loved those around her with unconditional love and a deep understanding of who they were. In May of this year, Shirley celebrated her 99 years of life, providing us all an opportunity to express the joy that her long life had brought us.
