Thelma Mae Freeman
November 6, 1925 - March 6, 2013

Thelma Freeman, 87, of Salem, Oregon died March 6th. Thelma was born in Sheldon, Missouri to Ida May and Oral Barker November 6, 1925. She lived in Missouri as a young girl, cared for by her grandmother following the death of her father. She moved to Willamina with her grandparents when she was 12 years old and lived with her mother, step-father, R. Lee Norris and siblings, Rudy, Lola, Louise and George.
Thelma married Douglas "Jiggs" Freeman October 28, 1945. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary together before her death. Following a honeymoon at the Oregon coast, they lived in Willamina for a short time before moving to the Freeman family farm, where Thelma and Jiggs were a part of the small farming community of Oak Grove, west of Salem. They raised a family of five children, Jency, Lynn, Dwight, Harold and Willetta (Willie), who all have fond memories of growing up on the farm.
Following their retirement from farming, Thelma and Jiggs moved to their retirement home overlooking the Willamette Valley. Thelma and Jiggs were avid square dancers, belonging to the Wagon Wheelers, Braids and Braves and Salem Square Dance Association for many years. Jiggs and Thelma's square dance friends were cherished partners in many a potluck, mystery dance destination and "Coast Crash".
Before her death, Thelma lived with Jiggs in the Gibson Creek Retirement community. Here she turned her sense of fun to Sittercize, Bingo and regular country outings. She was an active part of this community for several years. Grandchildren Chrystal Freeman, Jennifer (Craig) Jerabek, Marnie Rosasco, Paul Freeman, Ashley Ulrey, and great grandchildren Mason Jerabek, Jacy Turner, and Emily and Hope Ulrey provided much affection during her life.
Thelma will be remembered with love by her husband, Jiggs, children Jency Rosasco (Rick Mishler), Lynn Freeman, Willetta Craig (Dennis), daughter-in law, Valorie Freeman and sister, Louise Blackwell. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren and many extended family members and friends will miss Thelma and her sense of humor. She was preceded in death by children, Dwight and Harold, and siblings, George Norris, Lola Lord and Rudy Barker.
Memorial service will be Thursday, March 14 at 11:00 A.M. at Restlawn Funeral Home. Celebration following at the Oak Grove Community Grange, 5670 Oak Grove Rd, Rickreall. Donations in Thelma's memory may be made to the Independence Wagon Wheelers.
