Velma Folsom Sundet was born December 19, 1921 in Waterville, Kansas. She passed peacefully into God's arms on March 21, 2016 surrounded by her family.
She was raised and went to school in Williston, North Dakota. Velma became a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1943. She worked in the hospital located in Salem until July 3, 1945 when she enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Velma was honorably discharged January 7, 1947 as a 1st Lieutenant after completing 18 months of service during WWII.
Velma married her High School sweetheart James Sundet June 18, 1947. They lived in Williston, North Dakota and raised three children. In 1966, they moved to Salem, Oregon where Velma took a re-entry program at Salem Tech (now Chemeketa Community College) at Salem General Hospital. She was hired by the hospital where she was Head Nurse in Coronary Care and ultimately was the Diabetes Coordinator at the hospital. She retired in December 31, 1986 after 19 years with Salem Hospital.
James passed away February 6, 1995.
Velma had 3 children: Beth Peak, Jane Berg (Jim), and Steven Sundet (Clara). She was blessed with 6 grandchildren: Amanda (Joel) Arana, Cody (Darcy) Peak, Christy (Bill) McCall, Megan (Matthew) Thornton, Kimberly (Robert) Gales, and Craig (Dana) Sundet, and 10 great-grandchildren: Cody, Wyatt, Cooper, Lucy, Hunter, Savannah, Brady, Eva, Braden, and Parker. She is fondly called "GG" by her great-grandchildren.
Velma is also survived by her sister Joyce (Dean) Becker, brother Jim (Ella) Folsom, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Velma has been a faithful member of Holy Cross Lutheran since moving to Oregon in 1966.
She had many friends and loved her church family.
In addition to her church, she had been in a book club for over 35 years and played bridge with her friends a couple of times a month.
She loved quilting and made quilts for her kids, each grandchild's wedding not to mention other times such as birthdays, graduation and "just because quilts" and of course all her great- grandkids have quilts from GG! She made many more with her church quilting group and for others in her life.
Velma's steadfast faith in the Lord was her foundation. She raised her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren with the same trust in Him. Velma lived her faith, which was manifested in the many charities she volunteered in, her work at her church, and her support of friends and families' volunteer efforts. Velma touched the hearts and lives of countless people; we will never fully know the reach of her love in this world, and she will be missed greatly.
We are thankful for our time with Velma and for her health and mind that she had to the end. She is resting peacefully in Heaven with James, her family, and many friends.
