Virginia Mae Rose was born March 5, 1932 in Portland, Ore., to Oscar and Olive Houghton Hegstad, the first of two children. At age 9 she contracted polio and spent time in the children's ward at Doernbecher Children's hospital in Portland, Ore. After being told she'd never walk again, her father stretched and exercised her legs when he came home from work each evening. She wound up being the captain of the basketball team in high school. She met the love of her life, Carl W. Rose, at the Gladstone, Oregon Seventh-day Adventist campground. They were married Aug. 20, 1953. Then Carl taught Virginia how to drive. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Loma Linda University. She taught in a one-room school in the mountains of Montana, in a two-room school at Monument Valley, Utah; and Holbrook Indian boarding school in Arizona, and Casper, Wyo.. She and Carl traveled extensively overseas and on the North American Continent. When her husband became a minister, she worked beside him in various SDA churches in Oregon, Arizona and Washington. She loved music and taught and played piano and organ. She also loved to sing right up to the day before she died. Their log home in the mountains out of Colville, Wash., was their paradise. She loved the wildlife and the people. She was always eager to help anyone in need. They moved back to Oregon two years ago to be near their daughter.Virginia, peacefully breathed her last on June 23, 2018. She’s survived by her husband Carl W.
