Wesley ("Wes") Eugene Gladow died in Salem, Oregon on Saturday, January 3rd.
Born on January 13, 1922, to his parents Fred and Minnie Gladow, Wes grew up on a farm near Alma, Kansas. Following graduation from high school in 1939, he attended Kansas State University briefly, studying engineering, which led to employment at North American, an airplane factory in Kansas City. Prevented from joining active duty during World War II because of a severe eye injury, he was accepted into the civil service and worked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii from 1943 to 1945 repairing airplanes used aboard aircraft carriers.
He worked in Los Angeles for a short time after the war. An old Kansas friend invited Wes to Salem, Oregon to become a partner in a heating and sheet metal business. He met and later married Rosemary Mingle in January 1948 and the two spent their next 67 years together, along the way raising three children. Wes became sole owner of Salem Heating and Sheet Metal in 1950 where he dedicated his working life until retiring in 1985. Interests outside of work included hunting, fishing, sports and travel. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church and volunteered for numerous civic organizations. His kindness and humility touched many people during his lifetime.
Wes was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings. He is survived by his wife Rosemary, sister Nyla Stuewe (Tucson, AZ); brother Dean Gladow (Emporia, KS); daughter Genice Rabe (Stephen) of Salem; son Jeff Gladow (Joan) of Salem; son Grant Gladow (Nancy) of Edmonds, WA; five grandchildren (Elizabeth Rabe, Brooks (Cathy) Gladow, Jordan, Kim and Joe Gladow); and two great-grandchildren (Ellie and Drew Gladow).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7th at 3:00 PM at St. John Lutheran Church in Salem.
